چکیده

Sequence homology has been found between the L and M subunits o f Rhodopseudomonas capsulata reaction centers and the Q B-protein from all species thus far sequenced. The hom ology between the L subunit and the Q B-protein is contained in the sequence PFH M L G -------F ---------A M H G -L V -S and is believed to have survived three billion years o f evolution. A model is presented which associates quinone binding with this

Primary structure of the M subunit of the reaction center from Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides.

The reaction center is a membrane-bound bacteriochlorophyll-protein complex that mediates the primary photochemical events in the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides. The previously determined amino-terminal sequences of the three subunits of the reaction center protein were used to design synthetic mixed oligonucleotide probes for the structural genes encoding the subunits. O...

Primary structure of the L subunit of the reaction center from Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides.

The reaction center is an integral membrane protein that, together with several cofactors, mediates the primary photochemical events in bacterial photosynthesis. The amino-terminal sequences of the three subunits, L, M, and H, of the reaction center protein and the sequence of the structural gene encoding the M subunit have been reported previously. In the present study, we found that the 3' en...

Membrane protein damage and repair: removal and replacement of inactivated 32-kilodalton polypeptides in chloroplast membranes

Incubation of Chlamydomonas reinhardii cells at light levels that are several times more intense than those at which the cells were grown results in a loss of photosystem II function (termed photoinhibition). The loss of activity corresponded to the disappearance from the chloroplast membranes of a lysine-deficient, herbicide-binding protein of 32,000 daltons which is thought to be the apoprote...

Assembly of Newly Imported Oxygen-Evolving Complex Subunits in Isolated Chloroplasts: Sites of Assembly and Mechanism of Binding.

We have examined the assembly of the nuclear-encoded subunits of the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) after their import into isolated intact chloroplasts. We showed that all three subunits examined (OE33, OE23, and OE17) partition between the thylakoid lumen and a site on the inner surface of the thylakoid membrane after import in a homologous system (e.g., pea or spinach subunits into pea or spi...

Structure of the photosynthetic reaction centre from Rhodobacter sphaeroides at 2.65 A resolution: cofactors and protein-cofactor interactions.

BACKGROUND Photosynthetic reaction centres (RCs) catalyze light-driven electron, transport across photosynthetic membranes. The photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter, sphaeroides is often used for studies of RCs, and three groups have determined the structure of its reaction centre. There are discrepancies between these structures, however, and to resolve these we have determined the structure t...
